On Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 12:40:48 UTC, a massive 6.9 magnitude earthquake occurred near the border of Eastern Nepal and India. The earthquake caused severe damage and fatalities in Eastern Nepal, North Eastern India and the North Western parts of Bangladesh. It was fortunate that the telecommunications network survived the crisis. Otherwise, communications with the disaster region would have been paralyzed or at least created a major obstacle to facilitating information flow that is vital to understanding and responding to an earthquake disaster. Access to timely communication can save lives   In the event of another, larger scale earthquake -- which seismic experts say is imminent -- there is no certainty that we will have a functioning telecommunications network. In preparation for such a predicament, CAN-USA / Global Nepal Professional Network (GNPN) held a hackathon on September 25, 2011 and developed this Disaster Preparedness Response portal <link>. The organizers appeal to you to donate funds to sustain the ongoing development of the portal as well as establish a “Ham Radio", network to source information from the disaster zone, CAN-USA/GNPN.
